INYT: Brazil Detains Alleged Deforestation King of Amazon
The Guardian: Brazil’s king of deforestation dethroned in drive to beat land clearers
The Huffington Post: Brazil Detains Alleged Deforestation King Of Amazon
newscom.au : King of deforestation cut down: Can logger’s arrest stem tide of destruction in Amazon?
The New York Times covers the news regarding the arrest in a really concise manner maintaining a particularly neutral tone throughout the article. Moreover, despite the fact that it attempts to give as much information about the different aspects concerning the arrest and the crime committed, it does not really add any “personal” values to the story. Neither it seems to be focusing on the shock value with which the news might be tangled.
Overall. the INYT seems to construct the article building on an approach which mainly seems to focus on timeliness (and on impact as well).
On the other hand, the Huffington post initially seems to adopt the same method used by the INYT (the headline is identical), but the article develops almost entirely focusing on impact. More precisely through highlighting the importance which the rain forest plays, environmentally speaking, in the world’s climate.
Newscom, similarly to the Huffingtonpost, bases its approach on impact. However, there is a particularly noticeable attempt to shift the attention of the reader to the more general situation of Brazil, rather than to the individual arrest which has happened. Newscom adds an approach marking “conflict” as an element of newsworthiness.
The guardian tangles the story in a different way: while still dwelling on the timeliness of the action, rather than broadening the topics described through the article (as Newscom does), it actually narrows it down, focusing mainly on “human interest” and “timeliness”. Therefore, introducing the themes of the environment and Brazil’s situation only through the story of the arrest of Ezequiel Castanha.
INYT: The mysterious death of Alberto Nisman
The Guardian: Prosecutor’s death not suicide, says Argentinian president
BBC News: Alberto Nisman death: Key players
america.aljazeera: Alberto Nisman’s death blows lid off Argentina’s tainted justice system
The New York Times tangles this story in a particularly different way from the other newspapers that I found: it accurately selects the facts which have been happening and lists them chronologically in a really concise manner. This way the reader has the possibility to “catch up” with the still ongoing story. Moreover, due to the fact that most information reported in the article is reported in an extremely concise way, the reader has the possibility of going throughout the information without getting lost in the, still dubious, theories which have been made about different aspects of the story. I think that the choice of the New York Times to maintain itself as distanced and as neutral as possible over the all matter is a good way to tangle the story. Mainly because of the uncertain and still ongoing developments of it.
BBC news adopts a different approach: it attempts to highlight every single person which might have been playing an important role in the story, tracking (almost as a detective case) the reasons which any of the key players might have had in acting in one way or another. however, I feel as the approach of BBC, due to the really dubious nature of the all matter, really risks to unbalance itself towards one side or another.
The guardian seems more inclined to support the idea that the journalists might have been assassinated from the government. However, by doing so, the article leaves out a lot of important information which is actually included in the New York Times and BBC (more details about how the assassination might have been a setup from SIDE to endanger the government’s reputation).
On the other hand, Aljazeera does not really focus on the story of the assassination itself but rather tangles the story showing the response of the population to the persecutor’s death. Moreover, the article makes the story an example to talk, more broadly, about the corruption circulating in the Argentinean government.
